The Undergraduate Pathways Program
Undergraduate Pathways students improve their academic English while completing
academic coursework toward their program of study. Once you meet the graduation
requirements, you'll be admitted to one of the bachelor's degree programs.
Program Outline
TERM 1:
Integrating Language Skills for ESL
Emphasis on improving language skills in four different areas:
- Improving listening and note-taking skills through listening to academic lectures
and taking notes in class
- Developing effective strategies for improving reading
skills
- Reviewing grammatical structures in English that often prove troublesome to second
language learners
- Improving oral skills by giving oral presentations in class,
participating in role plays, and completing classroom projects with a partner or
interactively in a group
Advanced Grammar and Editing Skills
Emphasis is on the review of sentence-level grammar in personal writing. This course
provides background and an essential foundation for the subsequent.
Academic ESL Through History
Content-based ESL course focusing on integrating language, content, and learning
strategies in the acquisition of academic English. Uses content in American history
and civilization as the basis for developing academic language skills.
American Civilization
Political, economic and social development of American institutions and ideas. Satisfies
the American Institutions requirement.
TERM 2:
Introduction to Expository Composition
Emphasis is on expository essay writing. This course is designed to address the
needs of non-native speakers of English, and covers the first half of the material
necessary to satisfy the University’s Lower Division General Education Writing Requirement.
Academic ESL through Linguistics
Content-based ESL course focusing on integrating language, content, and learning
strategies in the acquisition of academic English. Uses text about linguistics and
language as the basis for developing academic language skills.
TERM 3:
Advanced Expository Writing
Emphasis is on writing 7-8 page expository papers with citations. This course is
designed to address the needs of non-native speakers of English. It has successful
completion of Introduction to Expository Composition as a prerequisite, and finishes
the material necessary to satisfy the University’s Lower Division General Education
Writing Requirement (WR).
In addition you will also choose three regular Academic Courses*
*During Term 2 and Term 3 you will be able to take introductory level classes in
your field of study. There may be restrictions/prerequisites for certain classes.
Students with higher English proficiency may be able to advance through the Undergraduate
Global Pathways Program in a shorter time.
