The Undergraduate Pathways Program

Undergraduate Pathways students improve their academic English while completing academic coursework toward their program of study. Once you meet the graduation requirements, you'll be admitted to one of the bachelor's degree programs.

Program Outline

TERM 1:

Integrating Language Skills for ESL

Emphasis on improving language skills in four different areas:

  1. Improving listening and note-taking skills through listening to academic lectures and taking notes in class
  2. Developing effective strategies for improving reading skills
  3. Reviewing grammatical structures in English that often prove troublesome to second language learners
  4. Improving oral skills by giving oral presentations in class, participating in role plays, and completing classroom projects with a partner or interactively in a group

Advanced Grammar and Editing Skills

Emphasis is on the review of sentence-level grammar in personal writing. This course provides background and an essential foundation for the subsequent.

Academic ESL Through History

Content-based ESL course focusing on integrating language, content, and learning strategies in the acquisition of academic English. Uses content in American history and civilization as the basis for developing academic language skills.

American Civilization

Political, economic and social development of American institutions and ideas. Satisfies the American Institutions requirement.

TERM 2:

Introduction to Expository Composition

Emphasis is on expository essay writing. This course is designed to address the needs of non-native speakers of English, and covers the first half of the material necessary to satisfy the University’s Lower Division General Education Writing Requirement.

Academic ESL through Linguistics

Content-based ESL course focusing on integrating language, content, and learning strategies in the acquisition of academic English. Uses text about linguistics and language as the basis for developing academic language skills.

TERM 3:

Advanced Expository Writing

Emphasis is on writing 7-8 page expository papers with citations. This course is designed to address the needs of non-native speakers of English. It has successful completion of Introduction to Expository Composition as a prerequisite, and finishes the material necessary to satisfy the University’s Lower Division General Education Writing Requirement (WR).

In addition you will also choose three regular Academic Courses*

*During Term 2 and Term 3 you will be able to take introductory level classes in your field of study. There may be restrictions/prerequisites for certain classes. Students with higher English proficiency may be able to advance through the Undergraduate Global Pathways Program in a shorter time.

Admission Requirements

All Undergraduate Global Pathways students must meet the following requirements to be considered for admission to the program:

  • Completed Undergraduate Global Pathways application
  • Minimum score on one standardized English language test.
  • Choose from:

    TOEFL: 45 iBT / 133 CBT / 450 PBT

    IELTS 4.0
  • A minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) of 2.35 on 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and official High School Transcripts (translated into English)
  • Personal Statement

Graduation Requirements

All Undergraduate Global Pathways students must meet the following requirements to graduate from the Global Pathways Program and enter the second year of a Bachelor’s degree program at the University of Utah:

  • Minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) of 2.5 (a C+ average) in the Undergraduate Global Pathways Program
  • Pass the University of Utah’s own English proficiency test

Application Process

The step-by-step guide to applying to Pathways at the University of Utah.

  1. Learn about the Undergraduate Global Pathways Program

    Talk with one of the Global Pathways representatives in your country. Contact utahpathways@kaplan.com and we’ll make an introduction for you.

  2. Send in your completed application

    Request an application form from your local Global Pathways representative, or online at www.kaplan.com/pathways. Be sure your application is complete by the application deadline and has all required documents including your English test score and secondary school and/or college transcripts. Our representative in your country will guide you through the entire process.

  3. Receive a Confirmation Receipt

    After we receive your completed application, we’ll send you confirmation of receipt by email. Upon acceptance a visa eligibility document (Form I-20) will be issued by the University of Utah to eligible applicants.

  4. Begin your visa application process

    Allow approximately six weeks for your U.S. visa to be processed once the U.S. embassy or consulate has received your completed visa application and payment. You can get help with the visa process from one of our local representatives in your country.

  5. Accept offer within 30 days

    To secure your place in the Global Pathways program, you will need to accept your offer by paying a deposit of US $1,000 within 30 days of receiving your offer details. Payment can be made by bank draft, electronic transfer or credit card. If you do not receive a visa, your deposit will be refunded.

  6. Remit full tuition and fees

    Once you have secured your visa, you must remit (by bank draft, bank transfer or credit card) tuition and fees for the Global Pathways Program prior to your arrival in the U.S.

  7. Receive Student Arrival Guide

    We will send you all the information you need such as where you’re staying and what to pack so you can prepare for your trip. Your Student Arrival Guide will also outline important dates such as when you can move in to housing, the orientation schedule, and when classes start so you can plan your flight accordingly.

  8. Arrive in Salt Lake City and attend Orientation

    The orientation program will help you with the transition from your home culture to the University of Utah environment. You’ll get to meet your fellow Global Pathways students, and be introduced to the University and the city of Salt Lake!

  9. START CLASSES!

Student Housing options

You have many choices of where to live during your Undergraduate Global Pathways Program. When you receive your official Offer Letter to Pathways you will also receive information about your housing and preferences. For example, do you want to live alone or with roommates? Do you prefer to cook or buy your food at the many dining facilities on campus and Salt Lake City?

As an Undergraduate Global Pathways student, you'll have two housing options: On-campus housing or ‘homestay’. On-campus housing is available on the university campus but space is limited, please contact us for detailed information. ‘Homestay’ accommodation involves living with an American host family. Whichever you choose, the Global Pathways staff will make sure that you're safe and happy in your new home.
